48 Hour Global Film Challenge May 21 - 23, 2021

Filmmaking Weekend Complete

2021 promises to be an exciting year for the 48 Hour Film Project and we are kicking it off with a special competition: The Global Film Challenge!

Participating teams will receive an email with their filmmaking assignment on Friday, May 21 at 7 pm (filmmaker's local time). The assignment will include a genre, character, prop and line of dialogue.  Teams will have 48 hours to complete their films and upload them to our website.  The official deadline is Sunday, May 23 at 7:30 pm (filmmaker's local time).

Step 1: Local Judging

Local judges in each city have two weeks to determine their city winners.
The Wild Card teams are divided into two groups and one winner will be chosen from each (by a different set of judges for each group).

Step 2: Online Voting

Online voting will begin approximately June 5 and is open to everyone around the world.
Round 1: Country winners will be determined by pitting city winners (from the same country) against each other.
Round 2: The global winner will be determined by pitting country winners against each other.
Round 3: The four finalists will go to our panel of international judges who will determine the winner.

GFC Gives Back

A portion of proceeds will go to benefit Doctors Without Borders and their efforts against the coronavirus.

You're a creative filmmaker.  You can't wait for the lockdown to be finished.  You want to show the world what you can do...
The 48 Hour Global Film Challenge gives you that chance!

The 48HFP Meets World Cup!

We're doing a mashup of the 48 Hour Film Project and the World Cup!  There will be online voting that determines the best film in each country, then we'll begin the Group Stages where country winning films will be randomly assigned to compete against other country winners.  In the final round, international judges will determine the winner.

How does it work?

It is an online Project with electronic Kickoff and Drop Off.  Participants are required to adhere whatever local government requirements and protocols are in place at the time of the Project (May 21 - 23, 2021).  We've seen what filmmakers are capable of in our Stuck At Home 48 challenges, and we know you will overcome any limitations presented by the current conditions.

Coronavirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic may have changed our plans, but it won't stop the creativity of you, our filmmakers.  As with our other official Projects, the winner of the 48 Hour Global Film Challenge will screen at Filmapalooza 2022 and receive a trophy.  In addition, the winner of this Global Film Challenge will be part of the 48HFP Screening at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner 2022
