Alumni Achievements: Houston 48HFPer Gets DirecTV Distribution DealTuesday, November 28, 2017

into-the-light-posterHouston 48HFP alumna Molly Vernon nabbed a DirecTV distribution deal for her short film "Into the Light".

The film was originally produced for a film festival in Los Angeles. Another 48HFP participant, Mark Baird, reached out to Molly to write and direct his alumni entry for the festival. Baird had previously competed in both the Houston and Los Angeles 48HFPs. He was tied up with film projects of his own and was looking for someone who could take charge of this project and run with it.

"I knew Molly and the quality of her work. I saw her 48HFP film "Cold War" the first year I was a part of the Houston 48HFP, and it blew me away," Mark said. "I was extremely happy to have her on board. I knew I could trust her with the project and its success has proven that trust was not misplaced."

Vernon and her team Moonlite Filmwerks competed in the Houston 48HFP in 2011, where their film "Cold War" took home the Best Film title. It went on to be selected as one of the 48HFP's official selections for Cannes Film Festival the following year, making it the first Houston 48HFP film to have that honor.

Since that time, Vernon has kept busy with film projects of her own, while also working as a film professor. She has continued stay involved with the Houston 48HFP by volunteering as a judge for several years.

"Into the Light" premiered at Regal Cinema's "Premier House" at L.A. Live in August of 2016. Since that time, the film has been shown in many festivals across the country and worldwide, and has garnered many nominations and awards. It got so much attention that Vernon was approached by Hewes Pictures LLC with a distribution offer. Within 2 weeks of completing deliverables for "Into the Light", the short was placed on DirecTV on the Shorts International TV channel.
